Samaritans restore faith

We would like to acknowledge a random act of kindness that took place in your city on Oct. 2.

At about 11:45 a.m. on that day, on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street in New Westminster, my 90-year-old mom and her friend, 83, were in a car accident. Both were not critically hurt, but shaken badly and hurt inside. They are recovering slowly but keep talking about two strangers who sat in the back seats and held their heads in gentle hands until the paramedics arrived.

We know that one person was an off-duty Vancouver fireman who directed the other good citizen in helping. My mom remembers asking, “Are you holding up the good reputation of the firemen?” to which he replied, “I am glad to be able to help.”

They also recall a lady in a white sweater who called 911.

We often hear that our society is uncaring, and that people do not want to get involved or engaged in situations they are uncomfortable with. This random act of kindness is reason to have faith in the compassionate side of mankind. Thank you, whoever you are.
