A recently announced independent judicial inquiry into the dwindling Fraser River sockeye salmon returns has two years to deliver its final report but MP Peter Julian is concerned salmon stocks will continue to decline during that time.
There are some things that can be done now, rather than wait for the results of the inquiry, he said.
“It is common sense that some critical threats to wild salmon can be addressed now, such as the destruction of habitat, sea lice infestation, predation and bacterial and viral epidemics,” said Julian, MP for Burnaby-New Westminster.
Julian, the NDP’s western fisheries critic, has started an online petition asking the federal government to take immediate action to begin addressing those threats to salmon. The Conservative government shouldn’t be allowed to sit on its hands for the next two years until the report is done, he said.
