Murder victim’s dad targeted by shooter

The father of a man gunned down in Richmond eight years ago as part of a bitter rivalry between two groups of Indo-Canadian men, may have been the target of a shooting on Lulu Island last Friday morning, Oct. 30.

New Westminster Police were alerted to a call of a shot fired at Jawanda Transport Ltd. in Queensborough, where company owner Kuldip Jawanda, father of murder victim Kam Jawanda, works. Jawanda Transport is a family run business.

Though New West Sgt. Gary Weishaar said the shooting victim was “grazed at the side of the head” and suffered a minor wound that required treatment at the scene, Kuldip Jawanda downplayed the incident as simply a Halloween prank, and originally denied that he’d been shot at or even injured.

He was standing outside his office, at 740 Boyd St., and talking to a co-worker when a man on foot fired what appeared to be a shot at them, and then fled on foot, he said.

Kuldip Jawanda said he didn’t see a gun, but offered police a description that it was a man wearing a blue fleece jacket, and a rubber mask with a beard attached to it.

Kam Jawanda was shot and killed by Sarb Dhanda in September of 2001 at Dhanda’s home in a Shellmont neighbourhood. Dhanda was handed an eight-year prison sentence, and was paroled earlier this year. Jawanda and Dhanda were involved in a series of tit-for-tat vandalism attacks on each other’s homes and vehicles, and Dhanda was dating Jawanda’s ex-girlfriend at the time of Jawanda’s death.

Kuldip Jawanda said he’s not fearful of further attacks, and said he was unaware that his son’s killer was free on bail.

Black Press contacted Kam Jawanda’s sister earlier this year for comment on Dhanda’s release, but she said she had been unaware he’d received parole.
