New West police pulled a drunk man from the Fraser River on Wednesday night, and he was lucky enough to only have what appeared to be a mild case of hypothermia.
Witnesses said the highly-intoxicated man was observed sitting on a railing with his back to the river when he suddenly slipped and fell in to the river.
The incident occurred in on the Quay boardwalk, near the 1,200-block of Quayside Drive.
After being called to the scene, officers located the 23-year-old Burnaby man floating in the river hanging onto a pillar connected to the dock. He was still conscious, but officers were at first unable to reach him. They threw him a personal floatation device and called in the New Westminster police boat, which soon arrived and pulled the man to safety.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene for symptoms of hypothermia and transported to Royal Columbian Hospital as a precautionary measure.
