A 22-year-old from New Westminster appeared in court this week after Langley RCMP found him asleep, slumped over the wheel of a stolen minivan.

Just before 10 p.m. on Oct. 3, he was discovered in the parking lot of a townhouse complex in the 27400-block of 32nd Ave.

One of the officers awoke the driver and identified himself as a police officer. The driver then put the van into drive and rammed a marked police car blocking the stolen vehicle. He collided with a nearby pickup truck and drove over a grassy area.

Police did not immediately pursue, but located the van shortly thereafter in the 27600-block of Fraser Highway. It had stopped running thanks to damage sustained in the earlier collisions.

Brandon Hamvai is charged with breach of recognizance, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, failure to stop at an accident scene and possession of stolen property. Hamvai will appear in Surrey Provincial Court tomorrow (Thursday).
