New West mayor leads local group to Asia

New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright will lead an eight-person delegation of city councillors and senior staff on a two-week trip to Asia to explore economic, cultural and educational opportunities.

The mission, funded in part from the remaining portion of a $50,000 grant from the province to support twinning initiatives with Asian cities, leaves Oct. 18 and will make its way through China for meetings with government officials in several areas before traveling to Japan for meetings in two more cities, finally returning Nov. 2. Mitchell Edgar, the city’s manager of economic development will also travel to Seoul, Korea for meetings with business leaders and trade associations.

Wright said they will, “bring officials there up to date on economic development opportunities that exist in New Westminster,” and “also discuss closer cultural and educational ties.”
