Police are on high alert after a pregnant woman was sexually assaulted on her way to work Tuesday morning.
The 28-year-old woman was knocked to the ground by a suspect who then touched her "in a sexual manner" before being chased off by witness who saw the incident.
The victim suffered minor injuries like scrapes and abrasions and was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital to be examined for precautionary reasons. She was later released.
The assault took place around 5:20 a.m. in the 600-block of Sixth Street.
The suspect, a Caucasian male in his mid-20s, ran up from behind the victim before knocking her down.
The suspect male is described as wearing skater style shoes, baggy blue or black jeans, a baggy black zip coat with a hood and a long white t-shirt underneath his coat. He was clean shaven with wavy and curly blond or light brown hair.
The attack appears to be random, said Sgt. Gary Weishaar of the New Westminster Police.
"An assault like this, at 6 a.m., is very unusual," he said.
The New Westminster Police Service Major Crime Unit continues to investigate the assault.
