A 23-year-old Langley man shot and killed in Burnaby Friday night has been identified as Jonathan Alex Barber.

On May 9 at about 10 p.m., two SUVs driving down the 7000 block of Kingsway near 14th Avenue were shot at several times in what police believe was a targeted attack.

A dark-coloured Porsche Cayenne smashed into the side of a building, crushing its front fender and shattering its windshield. The driver, Barber, was killed.

A 17-year-old Surrey girl, who was travelling with Barber in a separate vehicle believed to be a silver Jeep, was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim is not known to police. Investigators have not found any links to other murders, drugs or organized crime.

The crime scene, which spans Kingsway from Edmonds Street to Ethyl Avenue, was blocked off during the weekend for investigation.

"We've wrapped up with the crime scene and we're moving on to investigate tasks and tips. We'll spend the coming weeks talking to people and compiling information," said Cpl. Dale Carr, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigative Team (IHIT).

Police are also waiting for results from Barber's autopsy, which took place late Monday.

"Nothing's quick in policing," said Carr, adding that autopsy results usually take about 90 days.

Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT at 1-877-543-9217 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
