The women behind

the Royal Engineers

The story of the women who supported the Royal Engineers will be told at this month’s New Westminster Historical Society meeting.

Historians Jacqueline Gresko and Anita Bonson will be the keynote speakers at the Nov. 18 meeting held at the New Westminster Public Library’s auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.

Gresko and Bonson, a direct descendent of a Royal Engineer, will focus on the wives and daughters of men in the Royal Engineers Columbia Detachment that helped build New Westminster and the future province of B.C. between 1858 and 1863.

The two researchers will speak about some of the early families such as Keary, Maclure, McColl, Flux, Morey, McMurphy and Jane.

The program is free and everyone is welcome. There is no need to pre-register.

Visit sunnier climes

The monthly travel slide show at the New Westminster Public Library offers participants a chance to get away from it all.

Presenter Michael Le Geyt displays images from a Polynesian Odyssey, including stops at Easter Island, the Marquessas and Pitcairn Island.

He will show his slides twice: on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The travel slide shows are sponsored by the University Women’s Club of New Westminster.
