Clan forfeits early wins

The Simon Fraser University Clan football team has had two of its three victories this season reversed by the Canada West Universities Athletic Association that ruled the team had used an ineligible student-athlete.

An eligibility committee ruled the student-athlete, who had transfered from an NCAA school in the United States, did not meet CIS eligibility regulations when he enrolled in a graduate diploma program instead of a masters degree program. The CIS waives transfer rules if a student enrols in a masters program.

While the student was eventually accepted into a masters degree program on Sept. 24, the committee declared wins over UBC on Aug. 29 and the University of Manitoba on Sept. 11 as 1-0 forfeits. All statistics from the game remain intact.

The forfeitures drop the Clan, who were clinging to their slim Canada West playoff aspirations after a resounding 30-1 win over UBC in Saturday's Shrum Bowl, to last place with one victory and six losses.
