Fine field for Westcoast Curling Classic at Royal City Curling Club

The Westcoast Curling Classic, which often features many of the country’s top curlers, will have a blockbuster lineup at this year’s event at the Royal City Curling Club on Thanksgiving weekend.

It should be a preview of the upcoming Canadian Olympic Trials and even the Olympics. Eight of the 12 teams participating in the trials process are expected to attend the $80,000 cashspiel that runs Oct. 8-12.

The Canadian contingent will include the Ontario team skipped by Glenn Howard as well as Edmonton’s Kevin Martin and Randy Ferbey, consistently the top three teams in the country the past few years. Other top Canadian skips are 2006 Olympic champion Brad Gushue, two-time world champion Kevin Burtnyk of Winnipeg, Pat Simmons of Saskatchewan, Kevin Koe from Edmonton, Kelowna’s Bob Ursel, and a Royal City team skipped by Sean Geall, the defending B.C. champion. Greg McAulay, who won the 2000 world championship while curling out of RCCC, will be joined in the field by Bryan Miki of Royal City, who curled with McAulay in 2000 as well as 2004 provincial champ Jay Peachey.

The national teams from Japan, Korea, Russia and China are also part of the 32-team field.

In the first draw, Geall will play Jamie Koe of the Northwest Territories while Miki will take on Kevin Koe.

To kick the cashspiel off, Martin, the defending 2009 Canadian and 2008 Westcoast champion, and Geall will play a skins game on Oct. 8, 7:30 p.m.

Day passes are $10, weekend passes are $20 in advance. For more information go to www.westcoastcurlingclassic.com.
