Express edged in exhibitions

The Burnaby Express have suffered three one-goal losses in the past week. Fortunately, for the B.C. Hockey League team, none of the three counted in the standings.

The Express were edged 5-4 by the Langley Chiefs on Tuesday night at Bill Copeland Arena. On Sunday in Surrey, it was the Eagles edging the Express 4-3 while the Chiefs won 3-2 in Langley on Saturday night. Burnaby will be in Gibsons tonight (Thursday) to take on the Powell River Kings. The Express will finish up their pre-season schedule with a game against the Simon Fraser University men’s team at Burnaby Lake Arena tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Burnaby opens its regular season in Duncan against the Cowichan Valley Capitals next Friday. The Express’ home opener will be against Powell River on Saturday, Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m., which follows a game in Surrey on Sept. 18.

Express head coach Dave McLellan named 20-year-old Dylan Herold as team captain. Herold, who is in his fourth BCHL season, scored 13 goals and 28 points in the 36 games he played for the Express last year after being acquired from the Merritt Centennials.

Last week, the Express announced the signing of former Western Hockey League right winger Matt Ius. The Pitt Meadows native spent some time with the Express before joining the WHL where he had eight goals and 22 points in 126 games for Everett, Swift Current and Chilliwack.

• Former Express and Eagles forward Jon Bokla has joined SFU team in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. Bokla played for four teams in four seasons in the BCHL and the AJHL. In his 103 games in the BCHL he had 22 goals and 58 points in 103 games.
