Shamrocks shut down senior Lakers

The Burnaby Lakers sewed up the first selection in the 2010 Western Lacrosse Association entry draft by suffering a 14-4 loss to the hometown Victoria Shamrocks last Friday.
The Shamrocks jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead and extended it to 7-0 before Burnaby finally hit the scoreboard on a goal by Jim Southall at 13:19 of the second. Tom Johnson scored twice for the Lakers while Chris Fox had the other Burnaby goal.
The Lakers failed to score on seven power-play opportunities while the Shamrocks scored on three of their five chances.
Burnaby is 2-14-1 heading into the Lakers’ final game of the season at Queen’s Park Arena against the New Westminster Salmonbellies tonight (Thursday). They will finish last in the seven-team league since the sixth-place Nanaimo Timbermen (4-10-2) have five more points than Burnaby.
The Salmonbellies will be looking to get first place, but will need a lot of help to do so. New West (12-3-2) would not only need to win tonight’s game, but also have Victoria (13-3-0) pick up no more than one point in its final two games. The Shamrocks, who hold the tiebreaker advantage over the ’Bellies, were to play host to the Coquitlam Adanacs on Wednesday and are in Nanaimo on Saturday.
The A’s and Langley Thunder are the other two playoff teams, but the order was to be determined Wednesday night in their final regular season games. The Adanacs (9-8-0) headed to Victoria having beaten the Thunder 11-6 Tuesday, but trailing third-place Langley (9-7-1) by a point.
