Blajkevitch wins Stanley Park, Burnaby's Boiko loses in semifinals

Khristina Blajkevitch, 17, of New Westminster outlasted a tough, older American opponent to capture the women’s singles at the Stanley Park Open tennis tournament Sunday.
The top-seeded Blajkevitch defeated Tana Mahtani of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in a three-hour final. Mahtani was the tournament’s fourth seed and is going into her senior year with the University of Michigan tennis team.
In the semifinals, Blajkevitch beat fifth-seeded Kari Wig of Cochrane, Alta., 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 while Mahtani took out second-seeded Katerina Boiko,13, of Burnaby 7-5, 7-5.
Burnaby’s Jerry Turek teamed with Paul Reber of Eugene, Ore., to win the men’s open doubles. The sixth-seeded team did it by downing the No. 2 seeds Nick Coutts and Patrick Flint of Victoria 6-4, 7-6 in the final.
This week the 26th Hyack New Westminster Open is being played at the New Westminster Tennis Club in Tipperary Park next to city hall. There is no open women’s singles division but there is a 16-player men’s open category.
