Chin gets prestigious invite

New Westminster Hyacks lineman Casey Chin is one of 40 football players invited to a U.S. national elite camp in Orlando, Fla., later this month.

Chin was picked out of a camp held in Seattle last week. Hyacks quarterback Torsten Jaccard, running back Vivie Bojilov and receiver Daniel English also participated in the camp.

Hyacks said for Chin to be selected, especially since he’s only going into Grade 11 in September, was “huge.” Just prior to last season, Chin’s father Kevin, who was an assistant coach for the Hyacks, died.

Thirty-five of the Hyacks also attended a team camp in Oregon with four days of practices and scrimmages. New West won the scrimmage sessions with 80 points with the second-place team having 56. Chin was named top linebacker, Rama McMillan top lineman and Abdul Ali top defensive back.

This weekend, the Hyacks will be the hosts for the Big Kahuna 7-on-7 Passing Challenge at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex East. Games go today from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

McKnight moves to Purdue

New Westminster raised punter/kicker Brody McKnight will play this fall for the Purdue Boilermakers, which is in the NCAA’s Big Ten Conference.

While former St. Thomas More running back Marek Seta has officially transferred from the University of Minnesota-Duluth to Simon Fraser University, whether he can play for the Clan this fall remains in doubt.

Seta has applied to Canadian Interuniversity Sport to waive the mandatory one year waiting period after transferring on compassionate grounds. SFU offensive co-ordinator Shawn Olson said the coaching staff is optimistic the request will be granted because Seta’s father has fallen ill in the last year and has been unable to work.

Another former STM player, defensive back Marc Deslauriers, is also transferring from UBC to SFU to join his father, Lou, who is the defensive co-ordinator.

Burnaby Central grad Curtis Moss, however, is going the other way. After competing for SFU’s track team, he is moving crosstown to play football for the Thunderbirds as well as participate in track and field. Kevin Semenovich of New West, who has been playing for the Vancouver Trojans junior football team with Moss, will also suit up for the T-Birds.
