Football Hyacks third in spring AAA rankings
High school football season is almost four months away, but pre-season AAA rankings for 2008 are already out and both the New Westminster Hyacks and St. Thomas More Knights are in the top 10.
The Hyacks are ranked third, the first time they’ve been on the radar of any pre-season poll since turning AAA in 2006. The Knights, losers of last year’s final to the Holy Cross Crusaders, are seventh.
New West will hold its spring training May 28 to June 13 and will open its season Sept. 5 against a school from Oakville, Ont. STM’s camp will run May 26 to June 4. The Knights will hold a spring scrimmage with No. 2 W.J. Mouat Hawks of Abbotsford, the Pinetree Timberwolves and the Notre Dame Jugglers on June 5 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. St. Thomas More season opener is against Notre Dame, Sept. 5, at BLW.
DesLauriers to play in 2008 East West Bowl
Former STM defensive back Anthony DesLauriers has been chosen to play in the 2008 East West Bowl at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., this weekend.
DesLauriers led the Simon Fraser University Clan with four interceptions for 137 yards in returns last season, his first at SFU after playing a year at UBC.
The game showcases Canadian university players who will be eligible for the 2009 CFL draft. Linebacker Dan Chabot of SFU will also play in the game.
