Re: Olympic protesters are ‘terrorists’: Bloy (NewsLeader, Nov. 5)
From Athens to Vancouver a torch will cross borders. Symbolizing peace and unity, we watch it cross from one border to another. Wherever it crosses, it is accompanied by cheerful and disappointed individuals. The cheerful will cheer and the disappointed will protest. This all happens at every Olympic event. During every Olympic event, the cheers grow louder and the protests get bigger.
I choose to protest.
From one Olympics to the next, lack of funding occurs for more and more services. Because of the lack of funding, the vulnerable are more likely to be abused and criminalized.
More and more of the poor are becoming homeless. And the homeless are being ticketed for roaming the wrong side of the street.
Even if the 2010 Olympic Games will eventually bring goodwill and economic benefits, how significant will it be when the harm is already done?
