People want more rapid transit

We would like to comment on your recent editorial on TransLink’s rapid transit studies (Not idiots, NewsLeader, Oct. 31).
First, while up to $10 million had been estimated for four studies, this was cost shared between TransLink and the province.
To date, less than $2 million of this has been committed and, given the fact that funding will delay rapid transit projects, decisions will be made on whether the timing is right to do those studies now.
The fact that your editorial referenced “billions” for the UBC line is exactly why a study of that line is needed.
There are options for the corridor and the technology that could deliver a service for substantially less, and that’s precisely what the study is intended to determine.
Contrary to your comments, most people are calling for more rapid transit in the region.
While the funding to build them isn’t in place now, the work we can do now will allow us to move quickly when the resources do become available.
Given that the cost of labour and materials could rise rapidly when the economy recovers, the work we do now to be ready will save both time and money.
