Cameron library should expand

Re: Burnaby Public Library sustains 22 per cent cut in provincial funding (NewsLeader, Oct. 24)
The Cameron Street branch of the Burnaby Public Library, my local library, is too small for the rapidly-growing population in the new high-rise towers that have sprung up near the Lougheed Station on the Millenium SkyTrain line. More high-rise towers with more people have been built and are proposed nearby in Coquitlam.
Cameron’s collection of books is inadequate because of limited shelf space so patrons have to routinely request popular books from other branches. The children’s books area is tiny.
The dozen study desks are often full of students doing homework, so tutoring spills into the lobby.
There are no rooms available for children’s activities, visiting authors and special displays. The patron car parking space is inadequate.
The Burnaby Public Library needs capital funding to expand the Cameron library.
The provincial government has the wrong priorities, such as $450-million for a new roof for a private sports entertainment facility.
