The Burnaby NewsLeader is to be congratulated for its excellent expose of the wonderful agricultural land that still remains in the Big Bend area.
Decades ago a group of us and Joan Sawicki as Burnaby city councillor tried everything to convince the political leaders and city planners of the day to preserve as much land as possible for agriculture purposes.
Industry, developers and others lobbied hard to have as much land as possible and in some cases all the land in the Big Bend zoned for industry. Some of the land speculators allowed their holdings to be spoiled with excavation and other materials as to lend the soil unsuitable for agriculture and in some cases polluting the water table for acres all around.
The article proves we were right that agriculture in that area is way more beneficial to the city as a food source and economically sustainable than large paved parking lots and highways.
Thank you NewsLeader for bringing to light the benefits of having and preserving our agricultural land within our city boundaries.
