The Kingsway overpass linking Metrotown mall with the north side of the street has won a major award from a U.S.-based engineering organization.
Last weekend, Epp Structural Engineers of Vancouver received the outstanding transport project award for the overpass from the Chicago-based National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, the largest American structural engineering membership organization.
The pedestrian bridge, at the intersection of Kingsway and McMurray Avenue, was the first bridge structural engineering firm Fast + Epp designed, said the firm's Paul Fast. It was designed in collboration with architects Busby Perkins + Will.
The bridge features a unique combination of glue-laminated beams, concrete, and steel. An innovative wood arch provides visual warmth and structural integrity, while steel and concrete elements add strength and a contemporary visual expression. The thin concrete walkway, at less than seven inches deep, is particularly striking when viewed from the road.
