Groundbreaking day at Burnaby Central
The official groundbreaking for the new Burnaby Central secondary went ahead Thursday morning but not before the school’s aboriginal youth leader, Jay Morven, and his uncle performed a “new beginning” ceremonial song. The event marked the start of construction for a new $50.6-million, state-of-the-art high school designed to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The project will sustain 323 jobs. A new school was deemed more cost-efficient that renovating and seismically upgrading the old 1957 school. It will have space for 1,300 students and be ready for use in 2011, when the existing school will be demolished.
