A car crash in North Delta last week claimed the life of a long-time Burnaby resident.
Ronald Engelland, a 78-year-old widower, a father of six and grandfather of 13, was born and grew up in Burnaby.
He raised his family there, remaining a South Burnaby resident until 2006, when he moved to North Delta.
As a teenager, he worked as a horse-logger in the Cariboo, then went on to work in construction as a heavy equipment operator.
He was known for his love of the outdoors, fishing and gardening.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Engelland was driving his grey Ford Explorer northbound on 116 Street when he collided with a dump truck heading eastbound on Nordel Way.
That dump truck went on to hit another dump truck.
Engelland died. The three occupants of the two larger trucks survived with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
No charges are expected.
A memorial service is planned for Engelland on Thursday, 7 p.m. at New Life Community Church, 8765 Government St., Burnaby.
