A Vancouver police officer has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault that took place in Burnaby between July 31 and Aug. 1, say Burnaby RCMP.
The suspect was arrested Thursday afternoon by Burnaby Mounties and faces charges of sexual assault and incest. He will appear in Vancouver Provincial Court in September.
A publication ban is in effect preventing the release of the names of those involved, say Burnaby RCMP, who will provide no further information on the case as a result.
Vancouver Police Department said in a press release that once it learned one of its long-serving members had been arrested in the case, the officer was immediately suspended from duty. According to Police Act policy, the first 30 days of the suspension will be with pay. Vancouver police chief Jim Chu will make a recommendation to the Vancouver Police Board after that time as to whether the suspension will continue and whether it will be with or without pay.
The VPD's professional standards branch will shadow the Burnaby RCMP's criminal investigation and will conduct a parallel investigation under the Police Act.
"The VPD considers the nature of the offense to be very serious and abhors the actions attributed to this member," the press release said. "The department has informed the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner and will continue to provide the Burnaby RCMP with our complete cooperation."
