Burnaby RCMP are warning people of the link between identity theft and vehicle break-ins.

In the past week there has been a spike in thefts from vehicles in an area along Lougheed Highway between Holdom Avenue and Boundary Road. In half the reported incidents insurance papers were amongst the items stolen.

Increasingly, police are finding thieves are no longer just after electronics, they’re after people’s identities. Personal items like wallets, insurance papers, credit card receipts, computers, cell phones and purses likely contain valuable information that thieves can use in identity theft, which can have disastrous impacts for victims.

Don’t tempt thieves by leaving valuables in vehicles and report suspicious activity to the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.
