Civic candidates throw hats in ring

More than 40 people met the Friday deadline in declaring their candidacy for Burnaby city council and school board.

The preliminary list of candidates has incumbent Mayor Derek Corrigan of the Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) squaring off against local businessman Andrew Chisholm of Team Burnaby.

All the incumbents on city council are running for re-election. That includes Pietro Calendino, Sav Dhaliwal, Colleen Jordan and Nick Volkow of the BCA, Lee Rankin of Team and Gary Begin and Garth Evans, both of the newly formed Independent Voices.

Also vying for a council seat under the BCA banner are Fairchild TV host Richard Chang, Burnaby teacher Anne Kang and Paul McDonell, community volunteer.

Joining Rankin on Team's council slate are former Liberal MP Anna Terrana, Raymond Leung, businessman Jeffrey Chiu, chartered accountant Dino Infanti, chiropractor Stanley Jung, lawyer Amyn Lalji and electrical engineer Ian Lu.

Evans and Begin will be joined by Barbara Spitz in their coalition's run for council.

Independents running for council are Parvin Chami, Jim Ervin, Tod Fraser, Tom Tao, Ismet Yetisen and Steve Zeswick.

Over on the board of education, BCA incumbents Ron Burton, Tony Coccia, Larry Hayes and Diana Mumford will be joined by occupational therapist Baljinder Narang, businessman James Wang and union local vice-president Gary Wong.

Team's school trustee slate is: music teacher Agnes Chen, social activist Irene Leung, lawyer Iven Tse, former teacher and school administrator Franca Zumpano, businesswoman Linda Gu, accountant Jatinder Hothi and "health awareness specialist" Gesster Ramos.

Vying for a school trustee spot as independents are incumbent Helen Chang and Lotus Chung.

The deadline for nominations was after the NewsLeader's deadline Friday. For the final list of candidates, visit www.burnabynewsleader.com.
