Burnaby teachers recognized for excellence
Updated: October 07, 2009 4:27 PM
Three Burnaby teachers are receiving Prime Minister’s Awards for their Canadian teaching excellence. They’re among 84 educators, from preschool through secondary school, from across the country who are being recognized with the honour. In the early childhood education category, Melanie Castro Shibaoka and Rachel Rosen of Brentwood Nursery School received a Certificate of Excellence for their team efforts, which includes taking on long-term projects, even building a wooden bench themselves. In the teaching excellence category, honouring outstanding and innovative elementary and secondary teachers, a Certificate of Achievement was awarded to Richard Ryant, a grade 9 to 12 math teacher at Burnaby Mountain secondary. Ryant uses non-traditional activities in his math classes, such as singing, creating posters, and telling jokes, to motivate and teach his students.
Award recipients receive a certificate, a pin and a letter from the prime minister along with a cash award.
