Tradition is a comforting concept. So is the idea of tea, sandwiches, strawberry shortcake, Devonshire cream and other tasty treats. With a happy heart, Bowen Island United Church, aka The Little Red Church, invites the community to its annual Strawberry Tea on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 at the church at 1120 Miller Road and neighbouring Collins Hall.
Come out and enjoy tea and goodies along with a silent auction, a bake sale and other surprises. The local Grandmothers to Grandmothers crew will be there with strawberry jam and some rummage items for sale. The Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign seeks to raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa’s grandmothers. The campaign was launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation on March 7, 2006, on the eve of International Women’s Day.
The silent auction this year features work from three fabulous B.C. artists. Eric Metcalfe has generously donated one of his prints from his well-known Laura series. Metcalfe is a Canadian artist, born in Vancouver in 1940. Recently granted a Governor General’s award in Visual and Media arts in 2008, Metcalfe has exhibited at the University of British Columbia Fine Arts Gallery, the Victoria Art Gallery, was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition New York Correspondence School, and Morris/Trasov’s Image Bank Postcard Show. Print 14 of 15 from his popular ‘Laura’ exhibit is up for auction at the tea. A reserve bid has been placed on this piece and the excitement around Metcalfe’s presence in the auction has already begun to build.
Artwork created by admired B.C. artist Sam Black is also featured in the auction. An original painting of Black’s featuring two gulls will be up for bid. The third local artist, local carver Bob Miller, has created another of his exquisite birds to be handed over to the highest bidder. This year Miller has carved a northern flicker and it will be a blessing to anyone whose home or garden it might grace.
The Little Red Church Strawberry Tea has something for everyone. It is a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours and relax while eating delicious goodies all inspired by local, sweet berries. The tea begins at 10 a.m Saturday and runs until 4 p.m. It opens again on Sunday at noon and finishes up at 4 p.m.
If you are new to Bowen or have been here since the first sailing, we welcome you and will look forward to seeing many friends, family and neighbours at the Strawberry Tea.
