It’s getting increasingly difficult to say the Chilliwack Bruins aren’t for real. For the second time in a week, the surging team knocked off a Western Hockey League heavyweight, stunning the Calgary Hitmen 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Prospera Centre.
The Bruins were full value for the win, out-working and out-playing a team that is ranked among the top 10 CHL teams in the country.
The ending was great, but the start was lacklustre for the Bruins, who fell behind four and a half minutes into period one on a goal by Kris Foucault. The 19-year-old took a pass from Cody Sylvester, strolled into the right faceoff dot and fired a wrist shot that beat Chilliwack netminder Mark Friesen five-hole.
It was a goal Friesen undoubtedly would have wanted back, one that put his team down 1-0.
But the Bruins came right back five minutes later, drawing even on a goal by Jamie Crooks. Rookie defenceman Mitch Topping put a point shot on net as the forwards crashed the crease. With Kevin Sundher and Dylan McKinlay creating havoc in front, Crooks found the rebound and wired it past Calgary keeper Martin Jones for his fourth of the season.
Before the first period was over, the Hitmen restored their lead with a power play goal by Joel Broda. With Brandon Manning serving two minutes for boarding, Calgary’s top-ranked power play (31 per cent efficiency) went to work.
Broda was the beneficiary of a diagonal cross-ice pass from point man Ben Wilson, knocking the puck past Friesen for his eighth of the season and a 2-1 Calgary lead.
Shots on goal in the first period were 11-9 in favour of the Hitmen.
The Bruins owned the second period, out-shooting Calgary 9-6 and out-scoring them 2-0. Crooks tied the game at 9:13 with a power play tally. In a near carbon copy of his first goal, the Alberta native chased a Jesse Pauls point shot into the crease, knocking the puck out of mid-air for his second of the game and fifth of the season.
With time ticking down in period two, the Bruins surged ahead on a goal by Ryan Howse. The Prince George native took advantage of a Calgary turnover, storming in and roofing a backhander over Jones for his team-leading 11th of the season.
The Bruins led 3-2 heading into period three, and added a much-needed insurance marker 12 minutes into the final frame. With Calgary`s Michael Stone serving two minutes for cross-checking, Brandon Manning took a feed from Howse and hammered the puck past Jones for his third of the season, bringing the announced crowd of 3,052 to its feet.
The Hitmen pressed frantically in the waning moments, pulling Jones with 1:30 to go. But Friesen made a handful of stellar stops to preserve Chilliwack`s third straight win. Overall, Friesen stopped 28 of 30 shots directed his way.
The Bruins have now collected points in 10 of their last 11 games, improving to 7-6-1-3 on the season.
Heading into a Sunday night tilt in Vancouver, the Bruins sit fourth in the Western conference, tied with Kamloops and one point up on the Kelowna Rockets.
