A former student at Unity Christian high school will be honoured tonight when the senior boys’ basketball team kicks off its season.

Last May, UC graduate Scott Elzinga passed away in a tragic farming accident.

Elzinga graduated from UC in 2008 and moved on to the Columbia Bible College. He retained ties with UC, helping to coach the senior boys and junior girls.

Elzinga also went to morning practices with Chilliwack secondary school, helping their basketball program flourish.

At Elzinga’s funeral, coaches from all of the schools were among those in attendance (1,200 people total) with basketball being the major theme of the service.

“I would say that every high school basketball player from CSS, G.W. Graham, Sardis, Highroad Academy, and Agassiz knew Scott well,” said UC vice-principal Mike Campbell. “He was an amazing person, and I can’t say I have seen someone else so committed to basketball.”

With the permission of B.C. School Sports, UC opens its 2009-10 season three days early, hosting Agassiz in the Scott Elzinga Memorial Game this evening at 7 p.m.

“Scott’s favourite color was orange and we have 200 orange shirts for sale with S.E and #23 in a basketball in the middle,” Campbell explained. “We are framing Scott’s jersey and hanging it on our wall, and there will be a small tribute to Scott at half time with a small presentation to his parents.”

Campbell expects to have at least 400 people in the gym.
