Midget Giants rout clawless Bears
Cody Parray threw a pair of touchdown passes last Saturday as his Chilliwack midget football Giants (8-0) routed North Langley 50-7.
One of Parray’s touchdown tosses went to Jeremy Dumas and the other to Shane Grosvener.
The running game got stronger as the game went on with Josh Hayden rushing for three majors and Matt Van Geel scoring twice. The O-line stood up well, protecting Parray and paving the way for the backs.
Defensively, the Giants were led by the dynamic duo of Mark Middleton and Cole Herrmann.
Usman Ahmad and Evan Foster each made great tackles, allowing the D to keep continuous pressure on the North Langley offense.
The secondary held North Langley’s talented receivers in check allowing very few completions.
— The bantam Giants (3-3) overcame an early deficit to beat the Mission Niners 21-14 on Saturday.
After falling behind in the first quarter, the Giants got on the board with a 60-yard Steven Porcina touchdown run.
Trailing by eight late in the game, fullback Perry Ross pounded in from the three yard line to narrow the gap to one (14-13).
Despite playing with the flu, offensive tackle Clayton Cullen provided bruising blocks in the running game.
Early in the third quarter, quarterback Nick Westad connected with Porcina on a long-bomb touchdown pass to complete the comeback and wrap up the scoring.
Defensively, cornerback Logan Northey made adjustments in the second half to contain Mission’s biggest threat at wideout.
Linebacker Klay Laroque played both sides of the ball, and turned in an interception on defence, bringing it back 40 yards. Captain Connor Sliman was all over the field at middle linebacker.
— The junior bantam Blue Giants (5-3) lost a hard fought battle against the Mission Niner’s 24-16 last weekend. Connor Herrmann ran for one touchdown, while Clinton Boylan also reached paydirt after catching a Brett Westad pass.
Lance Nemeth converted on both extra point attempts and intercepted a Mission pass early in the first half.
On defense, the Giants played reasonably well except for some bad penalties that cost them late in the game.
— The peewee Blue Giants (7-1) defeated the Mission Niners 40-0 under the lights at Townsend Park Saturday night.
Led by linebackers Emerson Smith, Sam Meyer, Jordon Brueker, and Brody Patterson, the Giants defence did not yield a first down all game and held the Niners to minus-39 net yards.
Owen Eyres did a great job filling in at cornerback for the injured Conner Moore. Spencer Breslin and Tyus Devries had solid games in the defensive backfield.
The D-line was outstanding, with AJ Sagrott and Darwin Biamonte recording several sacks and tackles.
The Giants offense was typically productive, rolling up over 350 yards.
Tyler Sprott, Gabe Mannes, Wyatt Uzick, Spencer Breslin and Jordon Breuker found the endzone for the Giants. Top receiver Chris Derksen had a fantastic first down catch in the second quarter.
— In a cross-town atom matchup, Chilliwack’s Red Giants (3-5) shut out the White Giants (1-7) 20-0 to keep their post-season hopes alive.
Needing a win to keep those playoff dreams alive, the Red Giants overcame a sluggish start on offence with tenacious D.
Matt Stevenson, Colin Campell, Kellan Anhorn and Moses Bird came up huge on defense to hold the White Giants in check.
Offensively, Brody Porter produced three long touchdown runs behind the blocking of Braidy Roach, Justin Hopwood, Justin Crooks, Jackson Padgett and Josh Patterson.
— The atom Blue Giants (2-5-1) dropped a hard-fought 18-6 decision to Mission on Saturday. Chilliwack’s defense held Mission to only six points in the first half, thanks in part to some red zone stops.
Sadly, Mission’s D was also on its game, allowing the Giants just one score on a quarterback keeper by Riley Egan from six yards out.
