Chilliwack against the world
Jon Heron says it takes about three hours to ride a bicycle from Chilliwack where he lives to his job at the Surrey RCMP detachment.
That’s assuming there’s no headwind and no flat tires to slow him down.
Every time he’s made the trip, Cpl. Heron has wrapped up his bicycle commute by working a 12-hour shift at the Surrey detachment, where he is a training officer.
“I only did it three times,” Heron says.
The athletic Mountie puts his endurance and marksmanship to a different sort of test this week, competing at the 2009 World Police and Fire Games that began Friday at venues across the Lower Mainland.
The event continues through Sunday.
Heron, who is entered in biathlon, cycling and running events, is one of more than 10,000 law enforcement officers and firefighters from around the world in attendance.
They’re competing in events ranging from table tennis to wrestling – more than 60 sports at over 50 venues.
That is almost double the 5,500 competitors expected at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
A quarter of the competitors, 2,500, are from B.C.
