Eye opener for Howse

Chilliwack Bruins scoring star Ryan Howse got his first on-ice taste of the National Hockey League last week, travelling to Calgary for the Flames prospect development camp.
Twenty seven of the team’s top hopefuls were put through the paces at the week-long camp — an eye-opening experience for those who haven’t been there before.
“It’s been tough so far and it’s only going to get tougher,” Howse said after a particularly grueling power-skating session. “I was a little bit nervous, and didn’t know what to expect coming in. I had some butterflies before the workout this morning and the ice time this afternoon, but I think I really settled down.”
In addition to the on-ice activities, Howse and company took part in a series of seminars dealing with topics such as financial decision making, nutrition and public relations.
The 18-year-old Prince George native was picked by the Flames in the third round of June’s NHL entry draft.
He will be back in Chilliwack this season, facing off against fellow Flames prospect Lance Bouma, who plays for the arch-rival Vancouver Giants.
Howse returns to Chilliwack for the start of training camp in late August. The pre-season opens Sept. 18.
