A combination of too much heat and time in the bavarian garden stopped the Chilliwack Strange Brew dynasty in Vernon’s Camels Hump Funtastic Soccer Tournament a few years ago.
Coming back with a vengeance, playing-coach Cam Willmets led his Chilliwack crew back to the top at the 30th annual Hump, and the Brew bounced the Salmon Arm Courvas 5-0 in the men’s final Monday afternoon at MacDonald Park.
“We concentrated on getting more young guys who can run and know how to finish,” laughed Willmets. “We put away one of our earlier chances and it seemed to be an uphill battle for them. They’re a young team and I don’t know if they had anyone to show them how to get a comeback going.”
Roadrunner Jeremy Moore pulled the hat-trick for Chilliwack, who led 3-0 at the half.
Aaron Williams and Josh Florent contributed singles in support of Chris Reddemann, who got solid help from his backline and simply scooped up loose balls and the odd Courvas shot which sailed wide.
“We worked hard all weekend and ran out of gas today,” said Jesse Fraser of Courvas, who lead the North Okanagan Men’s Soccer League. “They showed for each other and worked hard out there for the win.”
Strange Brew, who pocketed $650, got two goals from Moore and singles from Willmets, Williams and Jason Barnes in a 5-0 semifinal victory over Edmonton Polonia Sunday night.
Courvas beat You Know It of Victoria/Salmon Arm 5-3 in the other semifinal.
Chilliwack stuffed the Camels 6-0 in Sunday’s quarterfinals after mauling the Mean Machine of Beaumont, Alta. 9-0 and grounding the Camels 3-0 in Saturday preliminary games.
Strange Brew came to Vernon after finishing sixth in the 10-team Fraser Valley Premier League.
“We love coming up here and supporting these guys,” said Willmets. “They’re so loyal to us and we have a great time here.”
Courvas brushed off the Mean Machine 4-0 in the quarters after slamming the Edmonton Static 6-1 and tying 1-1 Davidson & Co. Dynamite of Vernon in the round-robin.
The Camels bowed 2-1 to the Mean Machine in their opener with Matt Royal scoring for the Humpbacks. Bryce Green scored as the Camels edged Neighbourhoods of Calgary 1-0 in their other round-robin match.
