They partied hard, played hard and pulled off a repeat as women’s champions at the 30th annual Camels Hump Funtastic Soccer Tournament, held last weekend in Vernon.
With 16-year-old rookies and 41-year-old veterans, the mix worked wonders for the Chilliwack Rapids, 3-2 winners over Drunk Again Looking To Score, of Calgary, in a Monday morning final at MacDonald Park.
“We had a great passing game all weekend,” said Kelly Willmets, whose husband, Cam, coached and played for the men’s champion Chilliwack Strange Brew. “We know each other well, and we picked up a few players who complemented the team well.”
Calgary grabbed an early lead in the final with Sandra Noon-Ward equalizing just before the break. The Albertans went up again early in the second half, but Danika Snook tied things up for the Rapids, forcing the shootout.
In penalty kicks, Nikki Gaffney corked a shot off the post and watched it curl over the line, for the winner. The Rapids also got shootout goals from Roxanne Snook and Kim Orobko. Calgary scored twice.
“Once we put Shorty (Laura Short) on Speedy Gonzalez, who scored twice, she marked her very well and stopped her from scoring again,” said Willmets.
The Rapids, who collected $650, bounced Chicks With Balls of Victoria 4-1 on two goals from Andrea Northcott, while Drunk Again tripped up Edmonton Polonia in semifinal games Sunday.
The Rapids clipped the Lake Country Panthers of Winfield 2-1 in the quarterfinals after drawing 1-1 with Polonia and brushing back the Vernon Fusion 2-0 in round-robin action Saturday.
Drunk Again Looking To Score, who earned a bye to the semifinals, shaded Lake Country 2-1 and blanking the Fusion 3-0 in preliminary games. Calgary earned $450 for second place, while Polonia took home $350 for third.
The fourth-place Chicks With Balls clipped the Fusion 1-0, while Polonia edged Dr. Lee Dental/Checkers of Vernon 2-1 (Lisa Goodgrove goal) in other quarterfinal action.
Dr. Lee Dental/Checkers defeated Polonia 3-0 in their Saturday afternoon opener. Edeen Ramsey potted a tap-in off a Goodgrove corner, Irene Arrotta made it 2-0 on another tap-in on a cross by Natalie Smith and Andi King completed the scoring.
There were seven teams on the women’s side.
