Roundabout goes a lane too far

I’m writing this letter in response to the front page article your paper ran about the opening of the new Evans Road connector (Evans opens to traffic, Chilliwack Progress, Nov. 3). To quote the mayor, “No more honking, no more giving the finger, no more rude gestures.” Obviously she hasn’t been through the roundabout since.
It’s ridiculous. You take your life in your hands each time you use it. The people of Chilliwack are unfamiliar with roundabouts, let alone a two-lane roundabout. They speed through it, don’t use signal lights (which are a must), cut people off and do lots of honking and finger gesturing.
It should never have been two lanes. I realize that it needs to be two-lanes to accommodate large tractor-trailer units. But cars should only be able to use the outer lanes. The centre lane should be marked with diagonal lines as if it were a median, allowing the big rigs to drive over it if needed. Any approaching two-lane roads should be merged into one lane before entering the roundabout. It would make it safer for all concerned.
The way it is now, you better say your prayers first and have your finger ready.
