Y looking for alternative at Cheam
Updated: October 14, 2009 10:51 AM
I’m writing in response to your article “Door opens for Cheam Centre operator” in the Oct. 6 edition of The Progress. I’d like to point out two corrections that need to be made to some of the facts in the article that may not have been available to you during your research.
1. YMCA’s form of response to the City of Chilliwack.
The YMCA has sent a letter to Mayor Gaetz and City Council in which we asked Council to consider an alternative to the request for proposal process. The YMCA has not submitted a proposal in response to the RFP. Council will take the time they need to continue their process, but we anticipate the city will get back to us shortly regarding our request.
The YMCA sincerely wishes to continue serving the Chilliwack community through both the Cheam and Hocking Centres. We believe that maintaining a YMCA in Sardis is worthy of council’s consideration and, if asked, we will submit a proposal to continue fulfilling the YMCA’s mission to develop people in spirit, mind and body at Cheam Centre. If council does not consider an alternative to the RFP, the YMCA will need to reassess our programs and services and how they are offered to the people of Chilliwack.
2. Hocking Centre is not owned by the City of Chilliwack.
The Chilliwack Family YMCA located at Hocking Avenue is wholly owned and operated by the YMCA.
