Keep parents informed on H1N1
Updated: September 11, 2009 11:05 AM
I am writing in regards to the article ‘Back to school flu bloom won’t close classes’ (Chilliwack Progress, Sept.8) referring to H1N1 flu virus.
I became concerned when I read that, “We expect the schools to stay open even if they are reporting relatively high levels of absenteeism.” Then to add, “The schools will only be shut down if too many teachers are sick to ensure a safe environment for our children.”
What’s the difference? So keeping a school open because of high student absenteeism won’t be unsafe? Of course they would have to close if too many teachers were becoming sick because they’d have no one to teach!
I find this quite disturbing and worrisome. I just hope they plan on keeping the parents informed so we can choose whether our children are in a safe environment or not.
To keep the schools open in a situation that may be out of control just to keep the schools curriculum in order may be the decision of a Provincial Health Officer, but its our choice as parents to decide whether we want our children to attend an environment which potentially may be unsafe!
To say that it may be too disruptive to close the schools does not meet our concerns that our child’s health may be at risk.
