Attack leaves lasting mark
This letter is to the individual who randomly and violently attacked my 16-year-old son on Thursday, July 30th near the Vedder River Bridge. (Teen cyclist brutally beaten, Progress, Aug. 4.)
I know you were drunk when you did this as you reeked of alcohol and were holding a beer bottle in one hand when you hit my son. I just want you to know that he was just hungry and wanted to ride his bike to McDonald’s to get a burger. He did absolutely nothing to deserve what you did to him.
I also want you to know that the damage you caused wasn’t just emotional, although that is tremendous enough in and of itself. He had to be referred to a specialist in downtown Vancouver to try to correct the damage you’ve caused to his mouth and teeth. And just so you know, he just had his braces taken off a couple of months ago. We paid over $6,000 for that beautiful smile which you took away from him in your moment of unprovoked rage. We’ve been told he’ll be required to visit the specialist a minimum of 16 times over the next year for treatments/surgeries and dental work. The estimate I’ve received is for over $9,500 and none of it will be covered by my dental plan.
Just so you know, I’m a single mother. And although I work full time, you can imagine what a huge mountain this is that has risen up in front of us.
Do you have any idea the devastation you’ve caused our family? I can only hope, even if there’s only a one per cent chance, that you’re reading this letter and that, when sober now, you have some flicker of remorse for senselessly attacking my young son.
You’re a grown man.... what were you thinking? If you have any morals at all you will turn yourself in to police and take whatever punishment you get like a man. If not, then I can only hope that when the universe sorts itself out, you will get exactly what you deserve. It seems to me that you must be a very tortured soul to have attacked a young boy on the side of the road the way you did.
Whatever is wrong with you, you really should seek some help before you kill someone. Thank God my child’s teeth can be fixed. Your next victim may not be so lucky.
Devastated Mother
