Girl's sex assault story untrue, police say

A 16-year-old Coquitlam girl is facing a public mischief charge after concocting a story about a sexual assault while camping in Cultus Lake last month.
"Obviously, reporting a sex assault can cause a great amount of public fear, and we wanted to make sure the community knows it didn't occur," Const. Lea-Anne Dunlop said.
She said it appears the girl's story was "an elaborate concoction to conceal from her parents a consensual encounter with a male that happened the same day."
Police investigators arranged to have a sketch artist meet with the girl to come up with a composite drawing of her attacker, but Dunlop said further investigation "pointed us in the direction that this (story) was, in fact, a lie."
The girl, who can't be named because of her age, was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court on the mischief charge.
The girl had claimed she was walking to the Sunnyside Campground from a friend's cabin near Columbia Valley Road and Sunnyside Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 9 when she was attacked by an unknown male.
