A massive Walmart retail outlet is going to be built in the Eagle Landing development site, near the Evans Road Connector.
An investment group announced late Thursday afternoon that a 150,000 square foot Walmart will be developed within the soon-to-be Eagle Landing Retail Centre.
It is the second major business in a week to commit to the 700,000 square foot destination power centre and retail village, which is located on Squiala First Nation land.
Cineplex Entertainment announced last Thursday that a 31,000 square foot theatre complex would also be built within the site.
Construction of the Walmart is expected to be completed by Christmas 2010.
When the Evans Road Connector project was first announced in 2007, the buzz was all about the development potential for the area. A large-format shopping district, including big-box retail, was touted in the plans, as was a new hotel/casino resort.
The Evans Road Connector is part of a multi-million dollar roadway connecting Evans Parkway, north of the freeway, to Ashwell Road. The interchange is a partnership between the City of Chilliwack, the federal and provincial governments, and Squiala First Nation.
