Chilliwack firefighters were called out in force yesterday to contain a fire that was reportedly deliberately set in a downtown apartment building.
Tenants of the large 15-unit complex at 46030 Princess Avenue were safely evacuated after the fire broke out at about 11:30 a.m.
Police were on the scene and looking for a suspect as 40-50 firefighters battled flames engulfing the three-storey building.
"Police were able to determine that the fire was intentionally set in one of the units in the complex, and then spread to other areas of the building," RCMP Const. Lea-Anne Dunlop said.
Fire damage was extensive to the unit where the fire started, and there was water and smoke damage throughout the complex.
Police and fire officials are investigating.
Anyone who witnessed people in the building believed associated with the unit where the fire started and have not yet spoken to police are asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.
