A $2-million extension to the Bailey Landfill was announced Friday by Chilliwack city officials.
The federal government funding will extend the life of the landfill by 14 years to 2034.
The extension is also the first step in a methane collection system at the landfill to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas.
"It's a local solution to a local problem and environmentally friendly," said Robert Hobson, president of the Union of BC Municipalities, which administers the Gas Tax Fund.
Mayor Sharon Gaetz, MP Chuck Strahl and MLA John Les joined Hobson at City Hall for the announcement.
Chilliwack has now received about $8.6 million since 2005 when the fund was created.
The GTF, comprised of the gas taxes collected by the federal government, is aimed at projects that improve water or air quality, or reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Eligible projects include water, wastewater and solid waste, public transit, community energy systems, local roads and bridges.
Just over $1.4 billion is earmarked for BC by 2014.
