Evans elementary gets parking lot expansion

Evans elementary is getting a expanded parking lot despite funding woes from the B.C. Education Ministry.
When the provincial government froze the ministry's budget in June, summer maintenance projects in Chilliwack were also frozen – including the parking lot expansion at Evans elementary.
But with the new Evans Interchange removing all parking from Evans Road, "getting that parking lot done was a high priority for us," said Ray Velestuk, school district secretary treasurer. "We needed to do something."
Last week, the district obtained permission from the ministry to borrow $100,000 from the district's non-structural seismic upgrade fund to complete the parking lot.
The non-structural seismic upgrade fund is typically used for things like upgrading light fixtures, securing lockers and cupboards, etc.
"As soon as we get the [annual facilities grant from the ministry] we'll replace that funding," said Velestuk.
Work on the parking lot began earlier this week and is expected to be completed by the start of the school year.
Several other summer maintenance projects, however, are still on hold, awaiting funding from the ministry.
