Special to The Progress –

A local Sto:lo artist will be opening for Susan Aglukark at the Chilliwack Arts Centre at the end of October.

Inez Jasper, who goes by Inez in the music world, is known for her unique sound, which blends traditional native melodies with hip hop and R&B.

While she lives a busy lifestyle in Chilliwack as a singer and songwriter, health nurse and mom, Inez always makes time for her music.

“Without my music I’d go crazy. It really reflects my life experience as a young aboriginal women growing up in my community,” she said. “It’s about finding the strength and inspiration to pursue my goals and find a career.”

Inez released her second album last December, Singsoulgirl, which has put her up for five nominations at the upcoming Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards on November 6, where she will be performing live.

But opening for Aglukark is something she’s looking forward to with as much anticipation.

“I’m so excited to open her show. When I was little I would listen to Susan on the radio,” said Jasper. “She’s really inspired me by crossing over into mainstream music. It’s a goal that I would like to see myself achieve too.”

Not only is Jasper excited to open for a big name, but she’s thrilled to be performing for the first time in her home town.

“I’ve done a lot of performances across Canada and B.C., but I’m really excited to be performing in a venue like this in Chilliwack for the first time,” said Jasper. “It’s a bit more nerve wracking to perform for your own community and your own people, but I’m excited. There’s definitely some home town pride here.”

During the two performances on October 27 and 28 she will be showcasing her talents with an acoustic set. For tickets call (604) 792 – 2069. For more information on Inez you can check out her website www.inezmusic.ca.
