Donate tires; deter West Nile
The Fraser Valley Regional District is holding its third-annual tire round-up next month to reduce the breeding grounds for West Nile virus.
Even though the spread of the virus hasn't yet hit the Fraser Valley, despite years of warnings, it is coming, says roundup organizers.
"It's coming closer every year, and we're trying to reduce the risk," says Stacey Barker, FVRD engineering and environmental services coordinator. "If and when it does come, we want to be prepared, we want properties to be rid of standing water."
West Nile virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Mosquitoes that can potentially carry the virus tend to reproduce in warm, wet habitats like empty yard containers, flower pots, wheelbarrows, bird baths and old tires.
The FVRD tire round-up can reduce that risk.
On Aug. 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. FVRD will be accepting unlimited quantities of old passenger and light truck tires at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve on Sumas Prairie Road.
Drop off is free for rimless tires; $1 for tires on rims.
FVRD is also holding tire round-ups in Agassiz on Aug. 7 and 8 at the Municipal Gravel Pit and in Harrison on Aug. 9 and 10 beside the Public Works Yard.
