The Mission Secondary School junior varsity football team scored a 36-35 victory against New Westminster Sept. 17.

The Mission Roadrunners are in the AA category, but played a winning exhibition game against the AAA-ranked Hyacks.

Quarterback Brody Scharfe led the way, going 13-16 through the air for 197 yards and four touchdowns.

Receivers Hadley Gwyn and Rhys Parry each caught two touchdowns.

The game was close throughout and New West went ahead by seven points with about two minutes remaining in the game.

Scharfe led an impressive drive to bring Mission within one point.

The coaches then decided to go for the win and attempt the two-point convert. Running back Arel Corder slammed the ball in for the victory.

The win puts MSS at 2-0 early in the season, which bodes well for the team’s chances in the AA league this year.

Head Coach Danny Jakobs remarked, “It was a really fun win for our team, to do it at the last second against a very good New West team.”

The next home game will be at 3:45 p.m. at Mission secondary against Hugh Boyd.
