Winning a medal at the Canadian National Sprint Canoe Kayak National Championships is no easy feat, but the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club managed to score 12 this year.

For the Mission, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows athletes, just making it to one of the three final heats was a huge achievement because the finals involve the top nine competitors in Canada.

Like last year, RCKC finished 13th out of about 30 clubs across Canada, and as with the Canada Summer Games one week earlier, nationals was a team effort.

Ridge athletes made the finals and gained points in more than 25 events, with Ridge athletes finishing fifth or higher in 17 of those finals.

Ridge athletes also won medals in eight events, bringing home a total of five bronze, five silver and two gold.

Brian Malfesi earned silver and bronze medals for placing in the top three midget sprint athletes in Canada.

Gillian Fedechko and Michelle Kosaka also put in solid performances and brought home medals in five events, including a gold for the C-2 200 metre event.

“We have a great group of kids here, with many young kids new to our sport and new to the club,” said RCKC head coach Peter Majewski. “We are very excited about our future.”

The Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak National Championships were held in Sherbrooke, Quebec from Sept. 2-5, and the Canada Summer Games ran from Aug. 25-28 in Prince Edward Island.

The Ridge Canoe and Kayak club athletes will have two weeks off before training resumes again in late September.
