Where are education tax dollars going?

Editor, The Record:
I had occasion to talk to one of our school trustees, and stated that “I object to paying $30 a month for my son to ride the bus; the buses are going anyway.”
Her initial response was “I guess we should charge everyone then.”
Insult to injury! I pointed out that people still pay the same, if not higher school taxes every year.
She went on to say that the school boards are receiving reductions to funding. In fact, “AVG” funding is cut off for the next three years. She said AVG means the maintenance costs for the school buildings such as no repairs to leaking roofs or failing furnaces. I find that hard to swallow.
The income to the government for schools from the taxpayer has not been reduced, only increased. As I understand the situation:
n School taxes continue to be paid every year through our property taxes
n There are more properties paying school tax every year
n Schools are closing, so there are fewer schools to pay for
So these facts beg the questions: “Why is there reduced income to school districts? Where is the money going?”
I’d like to have the government provide some straight answers and accounting in writing! Mr. Hawes and company?
I certainly still object to paying extra for the use of the school bus. In fact, I’d like to see some civil protest via parents not paying. This kind of thing needs to be nipped in the bud.
