EDITORIAL: Leave the bylaw alone

Some of the most memorable times each summer can be found around a campfire.

Sitting out around a fire and roasting marshmallows is a great way to while away an evening, and thankfully for Mission residents, we don’t have to trek out into no man’s land to have that fun.

There is a perfectly reasonable burning bylaw in place in the District of Mission, and there is no reason council needs to make any amendments to it at this time. It’s a complaint-driven bylaw, and that’s the way it should be, and there are reasonable fines in place to keep most unintentional violators in line.

Ignorant homeowners who don’t use clean, dry wood, or who aren’t considerate enough to realize the smoke is drifting off and infesting their neighbours’ space need to be dealt with as firmly as possible, and maybe increasing the amount of the fines will smarten a few up.

Thankfully, these cases are in the minority.

This municipality’s residents are fortunate to be living in a district that still allows this enjoyable family activity. There will soon be a time when Mission is too big to allow backyard registered fire pits to exist, because enforcing the bylaw would prove too difficult.

We’re not at that point quite yet.

A few bad apples should not hamstring an entire community’s ability to have fun on their own little piece of heaven.
